Melissa Hemsley's guide to London

I’m one half of Hemsley + Hemsley and a champion of healthy home cooking. My sister and I have a cookery show on UK-based Channel 4, two cookbooks and an all-day cafe in Selfridges, London.

I’ve just wrapped up my first solo book, Eat Happy: 30 minute feel good food– it’s out in January 2018. It celebrates fast, flavourful food. I’m big on batch- cooking and leftovers, cutting down on food waste, supporting independent producers and spreading love through food.

I grew up in Kingston Upon Thames right by Richmond Park. I moved to Central London when I was 18 and have since lived all over: Primrose Hill, Camden, Brixton and, most recently, East London. It’s the world’s greatest city. I love everything from its restaurants, galleries and cathedrals to strolls down its riverbanks, street markets and the vibrant community spirit.

1. Brunch at 45 Jermyn St.

Head to 45 Jermyn Street for one of London’s best brunches. Request an orange leather booth, order the full english with a bloody mary sauce and kedgeree – the Queen’s favourite. Pop into Fortnum & Mason through the secret entranceway and pick up some earl grey tea and chocolate souvenirs before heading to the Royal Academy of Arts opposite or the elegant bookshop Maison Assouline.

2.Workout at Frame

Right next door to citizenM Shoreditch is Frame. Stretch out after your flight with a gentle, restorative yoga class, a mediation session or grab a friend for one of the amazing workshops such as ‘Dance Like Beyonce’. Gentlemen are very welcome too!

3.Lunch at Hemsley & Hemsley

For a lunch pitstop, I have to recommend my own cafe. It’s a go-to for tasty, healthy food– but not as you know it. Have the ‘hardcore’ green juice, the chimichurri salmon burger in the flax seed bun along with the dark chocolate coconut Paradise bars or stop by in the afternoon for a full-on afternoon tea with quinoa scones, raspberry chia seed jam and a cold glass of fizz.

4.An afternoon at Hampstead Heath

You can’t miss the glorious Hampstead Heath.

I go there often with my dog, Nelly. Bring your cossie, have a dip in the swimming ponds and a sunbathe. Dry off by the fireplace in the nearby 18th-century pub, The Holly Bush, before wandering Hampstead’s streets and spotting the numerous blue English Heritage plaques. Visit Camden on your way back to the hotel for an incredible line up of food from around the world at KERB street food market.

5.Drinks at Dandelyan Bar

If you’re around the South Bank, visit the famous Borough Market before jaunting along Thames to Dandelyan Bar at the Mondrian for one of their multi award-winning cocktails. If you’re more East, however, try Broadway Market before going to Netil House for a rooftop drink and a good old boogie.
